Acne is caused by eating certain foods

This belief has been around for a long time but no scientific proof supports it. Although certain individuals may seem experience outbreaks when they eat certain foods, there is no universal laws that apply to everyone. Your acne will not increase from eating chocolate, pizza, nuts, and greasy food.

Related to acne is dirt or having dirty skin

There are benefits to having clean skin, but acne isn't caused by dirt. Under the surface of the skin is where acne is formed and it's due to build-ups of sebum and dead skin cells. Dirt doesn't clog your follicles.

If you wash your face all the time, then your acne will clear up

This kind of relates to myth #3. Having clean skin is not the answer to preventing acne. Overdoing it as far as washing your face can actually make matters worse. If you strip your skin of oil, then this could lead to more breakouts in the future.

If you're not a teen, then you won't get acne

It's a fact that 9 out of 10 teenagers get acne, 1 in 4 adults experience it as well. Because acne is connected to hormones, it explains why having such a high incidence of acne are teenagers although adults also go through hormonal changes at various times in their lives.

Stress causes acne

In acne, stress is not a large factor and this is according to scientific evidence. For many years, it was believed that stress caused bouts of acne but it simply isn't so.

You can cure acne

Acne is a disease that can be permanently cured and this is what a lot of people believe. Unfortunately, this isn't the case. Acne can be controlled and prevented through proper skin care, but it cannot be cured.
